Leeds are now one of nine clubs in race to sign £3.5m race, alongside likes of Celtic and Rangers

The race to sign Hammarby defender Nathaniel Adjei is hotting up with Leeds United now listed along with eight other clubs as being interested in the Ghanaian – including Celtic and Rangers.

Adjei, 21, has impressed with Swedish side Hammarby this season – with the Swedish league played alongside the normal calendar. He has played 26 times in all competitions for the Allsvenskan outfit.

The centre-back joined Hammarby in the summer of 2021 initially on loan, before joining permanently in the summer of 2022. His form this term has caught the eye, helping Hammarby keep nine clean sheets.

He is naturally a centre-back but has also been used on the right of the defence. Belgian site Voetbal Krant say Leeds, Celtic, Rangers, Anderlecht, Sunderland, QPR, Boro, Preston and Bologna are keen.

The report claims that interested parties will have to pay a fee between £2.6m and £3.5m to land the two-time Ghana U23 man. But do Leeds need another central defender – even if Adjei is quite a talent?

Leeds boast Joe Rodon, Pascal Struijk and Liam Cooper as first-team options, with Charlie Cresswell solid cover for the first three. Ethan Ampadu, Luke Ayling and Ilia Gruev can also play at centre-back.

In the 21’s, Kris Moore and Diogo Monteiro are showing enough quality that they could be brought into the first team if required. Leeds are well-stocked in the middle of the defence – but that could change.

Cooper is out of contract next summer, Cresswell is sure to be frustrated with a lack of game time and Rodon is only on loan. The need for a centre-back may increase and that may explain interest in Adjei.
