‘The way it’s going’… Michael Carrick confirms Middlesbrough face double anxious injury wait ahead of Leeds

Middlesbrough boss Michael Carrick says he is unsure whether either Dael Fry or Hayden Hackney will be fit to face Leeds United on Saturday.

Both Fry and Hackney missed Boro’s 4-0 win over Preston North End on Tuesday, with the two having missed just one game between them until last night.

Speaking in his post-match press conference after the game, Carrick said he is unsure as to whether either will be fit for the trip to Elland Road as they continue to be assessed.

Boro already had several injury problems to contend with before the absence of Fry and Hackney, and will also be without Sam Greenwood on Saturday, who is ineligible to face parent club Leeds.

Leeds, of course, will be focusing on tonight’s game against Swansea City before they switch their attention towards Boro, who have an extra 24 hours of recovery over Daniel Farke’s side.

Fry and Hackney would be huge losses

Carrick claimed after the match that Hackney is nursing a groin issue, while Fry is struggling with hamstring, and they will continue to assess them ahead of Saturday.

“They both felt niggles towards the end of the game on Saturday – Hayden in his groin, Dael his hamstring. It was just the last couple of days so we’re still assessing the severity of both at the moment to see where they’re at. It tends to be the way it’s going at the minute.”

Boro, of course, absolutely battered a fellow top six contender last night in North End but there is no doubt that both Fry and Hackney would be huge losses.

Fry has been an ever present, while the only game Hackney missed was due to suspension and so it is clear just how vital they are to Carrick’s side.

Leeds need to be taking advantage of both the injury hit sides they are playing over the next few days, particularly after such a disappointing draw at Rotherham United last Friday.
