TalkSPORT journalist Alex Crook has poured cold water on Brighton & Hove Albion’s reported pursuit of Leeds United loanee Weston McKennie.

Crook wrote on his official Twitter account, ‘whoever thinks Brighton would sign McKennie is having a Weston’, amid reports linking the Seagulls to the USMNT midfielder.

Italian outlet Calcio Mercato Web claimed earlier this week that Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi has his sights set on a move for McKennie this summer amid doubts over his long-term future at Elland Road.

Brighton are set to be in the market for at least two new midfielders when the window opens with Moises Caicedo and Alexis Mac Allister both likely to depart.

They are also said to be battling Leeds for the free transfer of James Milner, while Mahmoud Dahoud is set to join upon the expiration of his contract at Borussia Dortmund.

Brighton not interested in McKennie deal

With all due respect to McKennie, he does not feel like the type of player Brighton would pursue if their recent business is anything to go by.

It is rare that they ever splash big money on one player, but when they do, it tends to be on a youngster with enormous potential they can sell for profit in the future, as already seen with Joao Pedro this month.

If Leeds are relegated, there is no chance that McKennie’s loan switch from Juventus will be converted into a permanent stay.

However, should survival be achieved, it bodes for an interesting window regarding his future with numerous reports indicating Leeds will not take up the buy clause in the deal, despite the fact an obligation was agreed back in January.

McKennie’s performances have improved since the arrival of Sam Allardyce, but whether it is enough to justify splashing out £35 million, is another question.
