The gap between Leeds United and second place was reduced by two points over the weekend after Monday’s draw between Ipswich and Leicester – and Neil Warnock discussed the promotion race.
Jeremy Sarmiento swapped West Brom for Ipswich earlier this month and the on-loan Brighton ace was on hand to nab a point for Ipswich at the death – after West Ham target Leif Davis scored an own goal.
A 1-1 draw. Leicester retain a seven-point lead over Ipswich at the top of the Championship table. Enzo Maresca’s side look as though they will run away with the title – or at least, secure a place in the top two.
With Leeds now in fourth, but nine points ahead of Sarmiento’s old side West Brom in fifth – it does look like it is going to be a shootout between the other three clubs for the final automatic promotion spot.
Ipswich sit on 59, in-form Southampton on 58 and then Leeds on 54, after a late win over Preston on the weekend. Failure to win that game would have surely consigned Leeds to a shootout in the play-offs.
Neil Warnock mentions Leeds when discussing promotion race
Leeds have the chance to close the gap on Ipswich to just two points on Wednesday. With none of the other clubs in the race to go up playing this week – Leeds play host to Daniel Farke‘s old side Norwich.
A chance to apply the pressure before a free-hit in The FA Cup on the weekend. On Sky Sports, during coverage of Leicester’s draw with Ipswich, Warnock gave his verdict on the race for the top two spots.
“I think Leicester are going to be up there anyway, without a shadow of a doubt. They’ve got two teams that could be in the top half. The three teams that came down are all strong enough,” Warnock said.
“Southampton, Leeds and Leicester. So Ipswich are punching above their weight a little bit. I think they have to try and enjoy it. They’re going to have to defend their lives tonight and put bodies on the line.”
