‘Steven Gerrard bracket’: Tony Dorigo delivers verdict on latest manager linked with Leeds job

Tony Dorigo has admitted he is unsure whether Patrick Vieira would be the right man for Leeds United.

Dorigo was writing in his latest column for the Yorkshire Evening Post, where he likened him to Steven Gerrard in the fact he has a point to prove in management after such a successful career as a player.

Vieira became the latest man to be linked with the vacant position at Leeds and is reported to be on the final shortlist as the process looks to be wrapped up this week.

Daniel Farke and Scott Parker are also among the leading contenders for the role, with all three currently out of work and on the lookout for their next role.

Vieira was most recently at Crystal Palace until he was sacked in March, while Farke and Parke were at Borussia Monchengladbach and Club Brugge respectively.

Dorigo unsure on whether Vieira would be right man for Leeds

Up until the long winless run that led to his dismissal, Vieira had appeared to be doing a good job at Palace, though he hardly set pulses racing in either of his previous two jobs.

For that reason, Dorigo believes Vieira very much has a point to prove in management, comparing him to that of Gerrard, who saw his stock drop dramatically at Aston Villa after his time at Rangers.

He said: “The latest name in the hat, we’re told, is Patrick Vieira, an incredible player, who would bring with him the experience he garnered at New York City, Nice and then Crystal Palace.

“The sounds out of the Palace camp always seemed positive about Vieira but results didn’t quite go his way and then he was under under pressure.

“I think he’s another one who will have many admirers and huge potential but equally he has something to prove and that puts him in the Steven Gerrard bracket.

“Wonderfully talented individuals as players but as managers, although they’ve looked good and had a chance, the last job hasn’t gone as well as it could.”

It is difficult to disagree with Dorigo. It feels as though Vieira is still very much living off his reputation as a player with the Frenchman still yet to prove himself in management.

This is not the type of manager Leeds should be looking to pursue in their position, and someone like Farke would represent a much more intelligent decision.
