Southampton man discusses whether Leeds will get promoted as his side secures 3-1 victory

Southampton manager Russell Martin believes Leeds United will be right at the top of the Championship table come the end of the season, despite watching his side run out 3-1 winners on Saturday lunchtime.

Leeds came into the game in good shape. Injured players returning to the fold in the form of Patrick Bamford and Mateo Joseph, while suspended Joe Rodon was back in the squad. Confidence aplenty.

Six unbeaten in the league, four consecutive clean sheets. Southampton, four straight losses. On paper, it looked as if this game was only going to go one way. But football does not work as obvious, as that.

Southampton were leading 3-0 at the break. A brace from Adam Armstrong, and one from midfielder Will Smallbone. Leeds, shellshocked. Pascal Struijk got one back in the second half, but not enough.

Southampton boss Martin was first to face the media after the win and he discussed whether Leeds will be fighting for promotion come the end of the season. He says he expects Farke’s side to be up there.

“Leeds created little. Most of their best from set-pieces. Hopefully, the toughest part of season behind us. Leeds are going to right at the top of the table at the end of the season,” Martin told Leeds Live.

Well, it is difficult to put your finger on what happened in the first half. The complete opposite of what happened against Watford, Millwall and the first hour against Hull. Little in terms of energy, vigour.

That confidence seemed to have been wiped away as soon as Armstrong struck before the two-minute mark. Leeds have got to start quicker and be more alert in the Championship. A lesson to be learned.
