Willy Gnonto remains at Leeds United in the summer despite refusing to play and now it looks as if the Italian could end up signing a new contract – and Tim Sherwood thinks he’s finally seen sense.
Gnonto, 20, refused to play in games against Birmingham City, Shrewsbury Town and West Brom last summer as he tried to force an exit. But he has changed agent, changed attitude and changed tact.
Indeed, the Italy star could now even be considered first choice after being given a chance due to injury suffered by Dan James – and grabbing it with both hands. Leeds want to offer £4m Gnonto a contract.
Graeme Bailey recently old us at LeedsUnited.News that a deal had been ‘agreed in principle’. But, the deal has not been confirmed as yet – though Phil Hay said today that Leeds intend to extend his stay.
Speaking on the No Tippy Tappy Football podcast, Sherwood discussed Gnonto – his situation in the summer and then, staying put and playing. He thinks he’s seen sense, and won’t join a bigger club, ever.
“Gnonto and Summerville – they want the Premier League. He [Gnonto] probably felt like a year out of the Premier League is not something he wants – but he’s seen there’s a good chance of promotion.
“I’m not sure he goes to a bigger club than Leeds if they get back to the Premier League. He’s probably seen sense, help them get promoted. Then he’s probably at the biggest-ever club he’s going to be at.”

Gnonto has the potential to go on and become a top Premier League player. But, there is every chance that could happen at Elland Road. Leeds are capable of establishing themselves as a top-tier outfit.
If we can, with the help of Gnonto, then Gnonto will realise his ambitions in a Leeds shirt. But, there is every chance that Gnonto may be tempted to leave. Failure to go up, and he will certainly leave soon.
