Sam Greenwood’s Leeds United future remains a picture of uncertainty. And now the former Arsenal youth man has dropped a big hint that he could be off.
Sam Greenwood is once again out on loan, and he’s again impressing, this time with Preston North End. Under former Leeds boss Paul Heckingbottom, Greenwood has scored seven goals in all competitions this season.
In the Championship, Greenwood has scored five in 26 for the Lilywhites. There was uncertainty over whether or not Leeds would recall Greenwood in January, but he remains at Deepdale, much to the delight of Heckingbottom.
The 23-year-old is under contract at Elland Road until 2026. But since joining Leeds in 2021, the attacker has made just 35 total appearances for the Whites, scoring once.
Though there remains uncertainty very whether or not he’ll be a Leeds player next season, with reports in December that Daniel Farke was ready to sell Greenwood during the January transfer window.

Speaking to Lancashire Evening Post, Greenwood has been discussing what the summer ahead might have in store for him, with Preston having an option to buy the Englishman at the end of the campaign.
Greenwood said he’ll take a move to Deepdale into ‘big consideration’, saying: “Obviously, I always focus on the present and focus on each game as it comes. Each season goes so quickly. I’m going to see what happens at the end of the season and I’ll obviously take into big consideration Preston.
“It’s a big decision. I’m in the present at the minute and I’ll come to that at the end of the season. It’s just one of them. I don’t really think about that at the minute. I just want to focus on my football, play, score as many as I can, just make things happen for this team.”
Arguably, if Leeds are promoted then that all but sends Greenwood packing, as he’s not someone who Farke could call upon in the top flight. Whereas if Leeds remain a Championship side, it could be a trickier decision.

What Paul Heckingbottom really thinks about Sam Greenwood
Heckingbottom has a rebuilding job at Deepdale. And no doubt, he’ll want to build a team around players like Greenwood who are still relatively young, but experienced and proven in the Championship.
On more than one occasion, Heckingbottom has hailed Greenwood’s ability, doing so most recently in January. He said of the Leeds loanee: “Sam is loving it here. He gets what we want from him and what the expectations are, but likewise that suits him.
“He loves football and loves playing. He wants to improve and feels like he’s getting that here. Not only the opportunity on the pitch, but we work with him on the analysis side of things on the training ground.”
Preston seem to have some key players out of contract in the summer and so a decision on Greenwood could be put on the backburner very briefly. Though if both Preston and Greenwood are keen to make their relationship permanent, don’t expect Leeds to stand in the way.
