Roy Keane said over the weekend that Sam Allardyce may be against managing Leeds in the Championship because of his ego – and Allardyce has bitten back on his No Tippy Tappy Football podcast, with his future in the balance.
Following a 4-1 loss to Tottenham, Allardyce and Leeds found themselves relegated to the second tier. Big Sam was only contracted until the end of the season. It is widely believed Leeds will go in a separate direction this summer.
But, The Mail say Allardyce and Leeds are to stage a meeting this week. Keane told Sky Sports that he does not see Allardyce in the Championship: “I can’t imagine Big Sam wanting to go back to the Championship. Not with his ego.”
Allardyce has responded. The ex-England manager has retaliated by suggesting that the Manchester United legend has a bigger ego, pointing towards Keane’s managerial career – claiming Keane has mistaken ego for confidence.
“My ego is bigger than Roy’s? Come on, no one has got a bigger ego than Roy. It’s some statement coming from him. He mistakes ego for confidence, experience and ability – which was much better than he did, wasn’t it.”
Allardyce bites back as Keane comments with Leeds future in balance
Allardyce would be foolish not to jump at the chance to take Leeds back into the Premier League, if he is offered the chance to do so. He is not going to be sought after, and he knows that – saying Leeds is likely to be his last chance.
But the chances are that Leeds look to go in a new direction. With potential new owners, the club will want to go more long-term and given Allardyce is in the latter stages of his career, he is not a long-term option. Pastures new.
