Ross McCormack offers Leeds United some hope in race for automatic promotion after Swansea draw

Leeds United fans are nervous that last season’s fall-off could happen again, but Ross McCormack has provided a reminder to supporters that could still help Leeds win a place in the top two.

Leeds have dropped into second place in the Championship, two points behind Sheffield United having been five points clear of Sheffield United at one stage. But six points from five games has that disappear.

Conceding in the 96th-minute on Saturday has seen Leeds lose grip of first place, with Illan Meslier once again to blame for both of Swansea’s goals. Burnley and Sheffield United are both in excellent form.

With no midweek game, Leeds fans are forced to worry until Saturday when The Whites go to Kenilworth Road to face a Luton side battling relegation but improving of late, securing 10 from a possible 15 points.

Ross McCormack reminds Leeds United fans of one positive

The table is not particularly bleak just yet, but the form is. Last season’s failure during the run-in is still loud and clear in the minds of Leeds supporters, but there is one thing that hands Leeds the advantage.

In the third-last round of Championship fixtures, Sheffield United and Burnley go head to head. It means that one or both sides will drop points and McCormack told TalkSPORT (31/03, 8.50AM) it helps Leeds.

“Promotion looked a stick-on for Leeds a few weeks ago but now, I thought they would have pulled away. But as Leeds do, they’re back in it. It was this stage of the season last season, in which they faltered.

“At this stage, there’s no easy games. Everyone will be fighting to go up or stay in the league, the good thing is Sheffield United and Burnley still have to play eachother so something has to give,” he said.

“I would like Burnley to beat Sheffield United, Sheffield United are the stronger of the two. They’ll just be hoping it’s not play-offs again. It’s going to be ever-so tight,” McCormack added, on the promotion race.

How many points do Leeds need to secure promotion to the top?

Normally, 90 points get you promoted. Leeds became the first team last season to fail in the race for promotion last season, with a total of 90 points. This season, it feels like that is another possibility.

Typically, in the two seasons Leeds are trying to get promoted, they might need a mid-90’s total. With Sheffield United and Burnley also on more than 80 points already and seven games left, it feels that way.

If Leeds can manage to get five wins from the next seven, then that will put them right in the mix. But given Leeds have won once in the last five, it seems like a tall order.
