Rob Green has shared to the Yorkshire Evening Post what Luke Ayling has told him about goalkeeper Illan Meslier. Meslier has enjoyed a record-breaking season at Leeds United in what was his first campaign in the Premier League. Green says Ayling made a big claim about Meslier.
The 21-year-old broke two massive records, as Marcelo Bielsa gave the France Under-21 international his full trust in the club’s first season back in Premier League football. Meslier broke Joe Hart’s record of clean sheets before the age of 21, clocking up eight – beating Hart’s seven.
Then, he became the youngest goalkeeper in Premier League history to achieve 10 clean sheets – again, beating Hart. He finished the season with 11 in 35 appearances. His form has been incredible, especially given the Lorient ace cost a bargain £5million. Ayling has made a big claim.
According to ex-Leeds goalkeeper Green, Ayling has told him about the young Leeds goalkeeper. Green says Ayling thinks that had Meslier been English, then the hype surrounding the goalkeeper would have been a whole lot more. Instead, he has gone under the radar somewhat.
“As Luke Ayling said to me: ‘If he was English, everyone would be raving about him’,” Green said, as quoted by the Yorkshire Evening Post. “He is an amazing kid and only 21.”
It will be interesting to see how long Leeds can keep Meslier. Given that the stopper has excellent at such a young age, his resale value is already massive. He is attracting interest, too. Mauricio Pochettino’s PSG are said to be keen, as per The National. Time will tell, over Meslier’s future.
