Key recruitment figures at Newcastle United wanted the club to make a move for Tyler Adams during the January transfer window, but Leeds had no intention of selling the midfielder.
That is according to a report from The Times, which notes that the Magpies remain admirers of the USMNT international this summer.
Leeds are certainly going to have to fight hard if they are going to keep Tyler Adams beyond this summer. He proved to be one of the only success stories from this past season.
Some at Newcastle wanted to make Adams move in January
In truth, the Whites were a shambles by the end of the campaign. But it is probably not too farfetched to suggest that Leeds may well have stayed up had Adams not missed the final 12 games of the season.
There is no question that Leeds were completely unbalanced when the 24-year-old was unavailable. So it is no surprise that many of the Premier League heavyweights now want him this summer.
Reports from 90min previously claimed that Liverpool, Tottenham and Newcastle all want Adams. And it seems that Eddie Howe’s side’s interest has been longstanding.
The Times reports that Adams impressed the Newcastle scouting staff. And key recruitment figures wanted the club to make a move in January. However, Leeds were not willing to let him go.
There would have been uproar had Leeds let Adams go in the winter. It was already apparent that further additions were needed if the Whites were going to stand a chance of staying up.
So letting the best player from the first-half of the campaign leave would have been a terrifying move. Unfortunately, that appears that that is just delaying what could now be inevitable.
It would be amazing if Adams was prepared to give Leeds one year in the Championship. He is a ‘special‘ player who is going to be extremely difficult to replace.
But it is going to be tough to stand in his way if he decides that he wishes to go.
