Planet Sport claim Junior Firpo is ‘expected’ to leave Leeds United ‘as soon as possible’ this summer with the left-back likely to return to Spain after spells with Barcelona and Real Betis in La Liga. Betis have actually been linked.
Firpo, 26, joined Leeds in the summer of 2021 from Barcelona after seriously impressing at Betis where he had a hand in 12 goals in 43 games from the left flank. He moved to Barcelona but struggled to oust icon Jordi Alba.
It saw Leeds swoop. Bought for a fee in the region of £13m, there was high hopes for Firpo at Elland Road – and a desire from Leeds fans to finally see our left-back woes put behind us. But Firpo has failed to that at Elland Road.
Just 51 outings have come in his two years at Leeds. Injuries limited Firpo in his first season, and that saw Pascal Struijk start the season as first choice this time around. Jesse Marsch’s exit saw Firpo come back in for a while.
Junior Firpo expected to leave Leeds as soon as possible
But, after just starting 14 games in the Premier League during 2022-23, his time at Leeds looks as good as over. The report from Planet Sport states that he is expected to leave ‘as soon as possible’ and go back to La Liga.
Spanish site Estadio Deportivo claim Betis are considering a move to bring Firpo back to the club. Qualifying for next season’s Europa League, a move to Betis would be a good one for him. Marc Roca is also likely to join the Spaniards.
Leeds have had an issue at left-back, really, since Charlie Taylor left for Burnley. This summer, we will have to look for another option on the left with Firpo set to go. Football League World say Swansea’s Ryan Manning is an option.
