Italian outlet TuttoJuve claim that Leeds United are leading Everton in the race to sign Coventry City striker Viktor Gyokeres this summer – with prior reports suggesting Leeds would be interested whichever division we end up in.
Gyokeres, 24, has been on fire for Coventry this season – scoring 19 goals in 40 games in all competitions. Not only that, but the Sweden star has been scoring in the yellow and blue of his country, too. But his contract ends in 2024.
TeamTalk reported earlier this year that Leeds were considering a £25m move for Gyokeres. It also suggested that Leeds would be keen no matter what division the club would be in next season – Premier League, or Championship.
Now, a report from TuttoJuve says that Leeds would sign Weston McKennie if the club avoid relegation – and that Javi Gracia’s men are also leading Everton in the race for Gyokeres. That is despite the plethora of options up top.
Indeed, Leeds have Patrick Bamford and Rodrigo as first choice. Georgie Rutter was signed for a club-record fee, while Joe Gelhardt has gone out on loan – scoring two goals at Sunderland. Mateo Joseph is an exciting talent.
Leeds leading Everton in race to sign Coventry and Sweden ace Gyokeres
There is no doubting that Gyokeres is ready for the Premier League and with his deal ending in June of next year, he is likely to be sold by Coventry as they look to take in a solid fee. But do Leeds really need to sign the Swedish ace?
Certainly, Leeds will have to make room for Gyokeres first before buying him. Rodrigo’s deal ends in June 2024, so there is a decision to be made on him. Patrick Bamford’s form is up and down, and Rutter is yet to shine at Leeds.
It might be that one of Bamford or Rodrigo are told they can leave to make room for Gyokeres, before striking a deal to land him. But it is clear Leeds want to land the striker – a striker that Mark Robins, his boss, said is “unbelievable”.
