AS Roma are interested in signing former Leeds United loanee Weston McKennie from Juventus.
That is according Calcio Mercato, who reports Roma director Tiago Pinto has contacted the representatives of McKennie with a view to signing him this summer.
McKennie is back on the transfer market after his loan spell at Elland Road came to an end last month, with Leeds unable to convert it into a permanent move due to relegation.
Leeds were reportedly obliged to buy McKennie for in excess of £30 million had they survived, though it was reported that would’ve not been triggered anyway due to his poor spell in West Yorkshire.
The 24-year-old made 20 appearances in all competitions after joining in January, but struggled to make any sort of impact and in the end, became somewhat of a lightning rod for supporter criticism.
Roma eye move for former Leeds loanee McKennie
As was the case in the winter market, McKennie is once again surplus to requirements at Juventus and they are keen to shift him off the wage bill.
Roma are the latest team to show an interest in the USMNT midfielder, with the Europa League finalists also on the verge of signing Diego Llorente on loan from Leeds for a second time.
Jose Mourinho is very much working on a budget this summer and so it is difficult to see them paying the £26 million asking price.
Instead, another loan move may well be in the offing, though Juventus are almost certain to want him off their books permanently, with Premier League clubs and Galatasaray also having been linked.
Based on his performances at Leeds, McKennie would be lucky to get a move to a club like Roma and he will be looking to rebuild his reputation at his next club.
