‘Punished’… Jamie Carragher makes claim about Leeds United fans after news about Everton this week

Jamie Carragher has shared his thoughts on how Leeds United, Southampton and Leicester City fans will be feeling after Everton’s latest charge.

Everton – who have already been docked 10 points this season due to a breach of profit and sustainability (P&S) rules – were handed a second charge alongside Nottingham Forest earlier this week.

The two clubs are found to have broken P&S rules for a three-year cycle up to June 2023 and according to David Ornstein, they are now at risk of a points deduction, but are set to defend their charges.

Forest and Everton were – of course – the two clubs who managed to secure Premier League survival at the expense of Leicester, Leeds and Southampton, all be it the latter were very much cut adrift.

Writing in his latest column for the Daily Telegraph, Sky Sports pundit Carragher believes Leeds fans have a case to feel more punished than Everton having been relegated by adhering to the Premier League’s rules.

Carragher says Leeds fans will feel punished

He said: “But the fact Everton may have been punished disproportionately because of politics cannot disguise the fact it is the club’s own failings that made them so vulnerable.

“Leeds United, Southampton and Leicester City supporters are within their rights to argue – as things stand – they have been punished far more having been relegated last May.

“Everton being docked 10 points earlier this season is no use to those who went down. They can argue they would have survived had the Premier League ordered their relegation rivals to stop buying players they could not afford, or were not permissible under the rules.”

For Everton, to get it wrong for a second successive year is poor ownership, but at the same time, there is a reason their fans are protesting for a change in that department. Senior figures of Leeds, Burnley and Leicester have already held a meeting to discuss whether they will sue The Toffees.

Leeds can only have themselves to blame for going down last season as they were an absolute mess. However, they do have the right to question how following the rules has in anyway benefitted them.

On the other hand, Shay Given made the point earlier this week that clubs towards the bottom will just have no chance of ever catching up with the likes of Manchester City if they’re just going to get charged for spending big. The gap is only going to get bigger.
