Daniel Farke believes Leeds United’s 3-2 win over Norwich City was the perfect type of game for the development of Archie Gray.
Farke was speaking in his pre-match press conference ahead of tomorrow night’s trip to Stoke City, where he spoke of his delight at how Gray grew into the game on Saturday.
Despite having played 90 minutes for England U19s three times over the international break, Gray was handed another start at Carrow Road, once again at right-back.
Gray had been impressive in that position during the win over Bristol City earlier this month, but found it much tougher in a tough away game like Norwich.
Norwich winger Onel Hernandez repeatedly got in behind him during the first half, but as the game went on, Gray was able to get a much stronger hold on him, which saw him subbed on the hour mark.
Farke delighted with Gray character at Norwich
Reflecting on Gray’s performance, Farke spoke of how pleased he was at the 17-year-old’s character to continue digging in, and in the end, feels like he produced a brilliant display.
He said: “Yes, this is why I spoke extensively about the importance of the development of the player in these games. Developing personality. Sun is not always shining on your career. Sometimes you have to dig in. Difficult away ground. Hard start to the game. Important to dig in.
“Same feeling first half was not too far from really good performance, but always the same after the international break. First game needs 20 or 30 minutes or HT, to shake the rust off. Topic for the whole team who were in the international games.
“Archie fought his way into the game with a really good second half. Onel was subbed second half and he had to defend against Rowe. Calmed him down and played fantastically. Quite important for a young player it is easier to shine when we are dominant and in the lead in home games.
“Tough away games, fighting, is beneficial for him. Have to learn he is a young player Not always a day for 9/10. Tough day make sure you are there with a 6 or 7. This experience at a young age is beneficial and I am delighted how we reacted during the game. Tough against Onel Hernandez, but he fought his way in.”
Gray to benefit from Norwich game
In the main, it has been plain sailing for Gray so far this season, with the first half at Norwich the first massive test he has faced from a personal perspective.
Having struggled early on, Gray was then much more assured defensively in the second 45 minutes, as Leeds came from two goals down to win 3-2.
At just 17, these sort of experiences can only benefit him moving forward as he looks to fulfil his massive potential.
