Reports from Danish outlet TV2 Sport this week claim that the ‘plan’ for Rasmus Kristensen is to return to Leeds United when his loan at Roma comes to an end – but surely, he has played his last game for us.
Kristensen, 26, joined Roma in the summer as one of eight senior players to leave Elland Road on loan – thanks to the relegation loan clauses controversially included in some Leeds contracts by Victor Orta.
It comes after a difficult first year at Leeds, following his £10m move from Salzburg. He scored three goals in 30 but really, he was bought to replace Luke Ayling – but he struggled to keep Ayling sidelined.
He has since moved to Roma where already, he is struggling to keep his place – and has been omitted by Roma for their Europa League squad. TV2 Sport say Roma have no inkling to keep him permanently.
Kristensen to return but surely he has played his last Leeds game
So, while ‘according to the plan’, Kristensen will return to Leeds in the summer – he still has no future at Elland Road. Surely, even though he will return to find three years left on his deal, he will be on his way.
Roma might not want to sign him permanently, but Leeds will want to cash in. Ayling’s contract expires next summer and it is unclear if he will sign a new deal. But Leeds have options on the right flank.
Djed Spence is only on loan but if he impresses post-injury, there is every chance Leeds pursue a permanent deal for the England U21 man. Jamie Shackleton and Sam Byram are excellent, as cover.
So, Leeds have options – even if, they decide to extend Ayling’s stay by a year. Kristensen looks set to return to Leeds after his Roma loan, but the chances are a whole lot slimmer in terms of him staying.
