Georginio Rutter struggled at Leeds United in his first six months at the club after completing a record move to Yorkshire in January – and Phil Hay shares what Sam Allardyce told the Leeds board about him.
It was a bit of a surprise that Leeds decided to spend a club-record fee on Rutter in January when the possibility of relegation was so apparent. Leeds needed a striker to come in and instantly, score goals.
What they got was a player that did not speak English. A Rutter, still incredibly young and inexperienced. He was not going to be able to provide the difference in a fight against relegation to the Championship.
Allardyce was the fourth manager Rutter worked under by the time he arrived for the last four Premier League games. He said Rutter was one for next season. A player Ben Parker described as “infectious”.

Writing him off, straight away. Despite fitness concerns over Patrick Bamford and Rodrigo, Rutter only managed sub outing against Spurs under Allardyce. Hay shares what Allardyce told the Leeds board.
“Sam Allardyce, who took charge of Leeds’ final four games as they were relegated in May, told the club’s hierarchy that though there was a lot to like about Rutter,” Hay wrote, on The Athletic’s site.
“But, the Frenchman’s flagging confidence meant he could do little with him in such a short space of time. At that point, Rutter had played fewer than 300 minutes in the league for the club, starting once.”

Hay shares what Allardyce told Leeds United board about Rutter
Rutter has been superb this season. Clearly, there was a reason why Victor Orta chose to bring him to the club and while he garners plenty of criticism – including Rutter’s signing – he is showing his talent.
Ultimately, Orta should never have signed a long-term project when a short-term fix was required. But, there is no doubting that the addition of Rutter is going to improve Leeds this season and down the line.
Even Big Sam, could see that.
