Leeds United now have a ‘high chance’ of completing a deal for Tottenham Hotspur defender Djed Spence.
That is according to Phil Hay, who was speaking on the latest episode of the BBC’s Transfer Gossip Daily Podcast, where he provided an update on Leeds’ pursuit of Spence.
As per various reports, Leeds have now made a concrete offer to sign Spence before Friday’s 11pm deadline as they look to strengthen their options at full-back.
The Whites are keen on signing Spence on a season-long-loan deal, with the 23-year-old not currently part of Ange Postecoglou’s plans at Spurs.
Spence only joined the North London club from Middlesbrough in a £20 million deal last summer, but has struggled to really establish himself as a regular.
Leeds have ‘high chance’ of Spence deal
As per Ben Jacobs, other Championship clubs including Bristol City and Swansea are reported to be keen on Spence, but it is Leeds currently leading the race, with Hay saying there is a ‘high chance’ it happens if the defender gives the final green light.
He said: “Spence is very much proven in this division, he won’t involved at Spurs from what we can gather this season. Leeds would like him on a season long loan, and if they decide he’s for them and he wants to come I think there’s a high chance that one happens.
“I get the impression it is (seen as a step down), but Leeds are having that thing of being back in the Championship and finding out who wants to play in this division, which isn’t many. But I get the impression that Spence thinks this would be a good move for him and Leeds would certainly take him and they would be very happy to get him through the door.”
This would be an unbelievable signing for Leeds if they are able to get it over the line, with Spence having already proven how good he is at this level at Nottingham Forest.
Spence has pace to burn and is a real threat going forward, and would provide a significant upgrade to Luke Ayling in that position.
