Daniel Farke was the key to Leeds United’s retention of Georginio Rutter in the summer despite interest from elsewhere.
That is according to Phil Hay of the Athletic, who reported this morning Farke told San Francisco 49ers Enterprises to knock back any interest they received in Rutter.
It is said at the beginning of summer Rutter was included on a preliminary list of players Leeds wanted to keep, a stance which was reaffirmed when Farke was appointed in July.
Borussia Dortmund had been keen on signing the 21-year-old prior to Farke’s arrival, but as per Hay, their valuation was just over £20 million and not what Leeds were looking for.
By the time Farke had arrived Dortmund’s interest seemed to have cooled though the 46-year-old made it clear to Leeds’ board he wanted to keep Rutter for the season ahead.
Farke made sure Leeds did not sell Rutter
Farke’s determination to keep Rutter at Elland Road has so far paid off with the Frenchman getting better and better by the week.
Leeds, and at the same time Rutter, could’ve been forgiven for seeking a transfer in the summer given how difficult he found his first few months at Elland Road.
However, both sides appeared extremely willing to make it work despite the drop in division, with Rutter now beginning to establish himself as a fan favourite.
Rutter has two goals and two assists so far this season, with regular game time in a set position seemingly bringing out the best of his abilities.
If he can spearhead Leeds back to the Premier League, that would be worth more than any quick sale could’ve generated in the summer.
