Phil Hay says 23-year-old now set to undergo Leeds medical as £5m deal agreed

Werder Bremen midfielder Ilia Gruev is set to undergo a medical at Leeds United.

That is according to Phil Hay, who reports that Gruev has already travelled to England ahead of his proposed move to Elland Road, which is set to be completed in the next 24 hours.

Leeds have agreed a fee of around £5 million with Werder Bremen for the 23-year-old, who Hay says is one of two central midfielders expected to sign.

News of Leeds’ interest in Gruev first emerged on Wednesday with ITV journalist Chris Dawkes reporting the Whites were keen on doing a deal.

Since then, a transfer has clearly progressed quickly as the clock ticks towards tomorrow’s 11pm deadline with Gruev likely to be the seventh signing of the summer.

Gruev set to undergo Leeds medical

Leeds have prioritised the addition of central midfielders in the final couple of days of the window following the signing of Djed Spence yesterday.

On top of Gruev, Leeds are also expected to sign one more with Rangers’ Glen Kamara and Celtic’s Matt O’Riley among those on the list.

Kamara has been a target for Leeds throughout the summer but for whatever reason, a deal has not been moved towards completion.

O’Riley, meanwhile, was first mentioned by Sky Sports on Tuesday evening, with Leeds set to battle Southampton for the 22-year-old’s signature.

With a deal for Nadiem Amiri having fallen through earlier this week, hopefully Leeds are also able to add a number 10 as well.
