Leeds United are interested in signing Celtic midfielder Matt O’Riley.
That is according to Sky Sports, who report Leeds are ready to battle Southampton for the signature of the 22-year-old as they prepare for a busy last three days of the window.
It is said that clubs from abroad are also keen on a deal for O’Riley, who is one of several players Leeds are keen to sign before Friday’s deadline.
Djed Spence is expected to be the first through the door on a season-long-loan from Tottenham Hotspur, with Luke Thomas, Glen Kamara and Joseph Paintsil just a selection of names also linked with a move.
However, one player who will not be moving to Elland Road is Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Nadiem Amiri, with Leeds having withdrawn their interest yesterday, according to Phil Hay.
Leeds now want to sign Celtic’s O’Riley
As such, Leeds are now back to the drawing board in their hunt for a new creative midfielder, and while O’Riley is more of a number eight, he is someone that fits that bill.
O’Riley scored three goals and registered 11 assists last season as Celtic romped to another Scottish Premiership title.
His tally of 11 assists is 10 more than that of Amiri, who managed just one across the entirety of the 2022/23 Bundesliga campaign.
O’Riley has also started this season on fire despite Celtic’s below-par performances, with the Denmark international already on three g/a’s in as many games.
He would represent a significant coup if Leeds were able to get him in, but you would imagine Celtic will be reluctant to sell.
