Leeds United midfielder Sam Greenwood is set to join Middlesbrough on a season-long-loan.
That is according to Phil Hay of the Athletic, who reports Greenwood does not feature in Daniel Farke’s short-term plans and as such, is set to move to the Riverside.
Greenwood signed a new four-year-deal at Elland Road just over 12 month ago but is still yet to really establish himself as a regular at the club.
Having had an injury hit pre-season, Greenwood made his first appearance of the season for the Whites from the bench in Leeds’ Carabao Cup penalty shootout defeat at Salford City.
And it now looks as though it will be Greenwood’s only appearance in a white shirt this season as he prepares for a move to Middlesbrough.
Greenwood set to join Boro from Leeds
It is perhaps a little surprising Leeds are willing to loan him out to a potential promotion contender but he is at the point of his career where he needs regular minutes.
Greenwood has made 35 senior appearances during his time at Leeds but only nine of those have come from the start, which at 21, is not enough for his development.
He has been used in more of a midfield role in Leeds’ first team having initially joined the Whites from Arsenal as more of an out and out forward.
The fact Leeds are prepared to sanction his exit would indicate they are confident of bringing in some new midfielders imminently.
Leeds need at least two more before the end of the window with depth already looking pretty threadbare in that area.
