Phil Hay is expecting Leeds United to target the addition of a goalkeeper once the signing of Ethan Ampadu is confirmed.
Hay was speaking on the latest episode of the Square Ball Podcast, where he explained how it is a position Leeds are looking to get sorted as soon as possible irrespective of the future of Illan Meslier.
Leeds have already lost last season’s number two in Joel Robles after he confirmed his departure from Elland Road yesterday, but it appears as though the Whites are in the market for a new first choice shot-stopper.
Hay has previously spoken of his expectation that Meslier moves on this summer, with all parties viewing a transfer as mutually beneficial for all parties.
Leeds are, however, yet to receive an offer for the 23-year-old, though there is still plenty of time left in the window for that to arrive.
Hay expects Leeds to move for goalkeeper next
Ampadu is set to become signing number one of the summer at Leeds after an agreement of £7 million + add-ons was reached with Chelsea.
With San Francisco 49ers Enterprises having now received EFL approval for their takeover, things may now start to move quicker and Hay believes a goalkeeper could next week.
He said: “I think they’re minded to take an offer for Meslier if they get one that is good enough, but I don’t think there has been any first approaches yet. The fact they’re cracking on with goalkeepers, and it wouldn’t surprise me at all if that was to be next on the list after Ampadu, makes you realise they’re looking for a change there.”
Goalkeeper is the position where there has been the most concrete links this summer with Bayern Munich’s Alexander Nubel and Newcastle United’s Karl Darlow on the list.
Both are set to be allowed their current clubs this summer and would represent smart business, particularly in the form of Nubel given his age and top-flight pedigree.
