Saturday evening’s clash against Harrogate Town was always going to see Karl Darlow start for Leeds United but now, Daniel Farke has a decision to make against Sheffield Wednesday.

In what was only Karl Darlow’s sixth appearance for Leeds since he joined the club in the summer of 2023, he kept a clean sheet despite Harrogate providing Leeds with a few more issues than probably expected.

Largie Ramazani got the only goal of the game with the pocket-sized winger scoring a header, his fourth in Leeds colours since his move from Almeria. But Darlow was called into action during the second half.

Whether he retains his place against Sheffield Wednesday next Saturday in place of Illan Meslier remains to be seen. But, Darlow was as solid as he could have been and Paul Robinson was left impressed.

Paul Robinson shares why he was impressed by Karl Darlow

There has been plenty of clamour for Meslier to be dropped. The Frenchman was arguably at fault for all three goals at Hull and it is not the first time he has been accused of making mistakes during 2024-25.

Stuart Dallas says he would drop Meslier and give Darlow a run in the side, claiming in any other position Meslier would be dropped. Robinson thinks a moment in the second half might just convince Farke.

There was a moment of danger in the second half when Josh March looked as though he might get to the ball before Darlow and win a penalty, or score. But Darlow was on hand to make contact on the ball.

A brilliant stop that was one of only a few involvements made by Darlow and Robinson was impressed. He said on BBC Radio 5 Live, as per BBC Live: “It’s a long ball from Harrogate straight down the middle.

“James Daly with a really good flick on. Karl Darlow comes flying out of his goal and times it to perfection. If Josh March gets anything on that then he’s round the goalkeeper and it’s a penalty,” Robinson said.

Daniel Farke seems to have already made his goalkeeper decision

So, Darlow was solid in what might have been a trial match for the Wales international against Harrogate. But Meslier does have 14 clean sheets in 26 games despite his mistakes during Leeds push for promotion.

However, his comments ahead of Saturday’s game and Farke’s staunch defence of £15m-rated Meslier shows he has made his choice. He might not be 100% happy with Meslier, but he is backing the stopper.

Darlow’s intervention which left Robinson impressed will have impressed Farke and his performance may tempt the German. But it is likely that Meslier remains in the starting line-up against Sheffield Wednesday.
