Daniel Farke has told Friday’s press conference – as per the club’s YouTube – that Leeds United midfielder Sam Greenwood will return to training in the next fortnight when rehab is done, after missing the last three friendlies.

Greenwood, 21, was in and out of the Leeds side last season. But this time around, he is expected to play more of a senior role. He started in the 10 role against Manchester United, but missed the next three pre-season friendlies.

Not much communication has come from the club in regards to the £3m signing – but it is clear that the midfielder is out with an injury. Another player, that takes the injury list at Leeds to a whopping nine players already this term.

Patrick Bamford, Georgie Rutter, Mateo Joseph, Stuart Dallas, Junior Firpo, Tyler Adams, Jack Harrison and Cody Drameh could all miss Sunday’s clash – and Greenwood will too. Farke said he is close to a return to Leeds training.

“Much improved”, Farke said, when asked about Greenwood’s injury and when we can expect him back in the Leeds side. “I hope he will be in training in the next couple of weeks. I would say he is in the final stages of his rehab.”

Leeds are clearly prioritising moves for a centre-back, a left-back and a striker this summer. But the no.10 role is just as important as an in a Farke 4-2-3-1 system. Just look at how big Emi Buendia was during his Norwich spell.

Brenden Aaronson has gone. He might have actually done well under Farke, but he has moved to Union Berlin in Germany, where he will be playing Champions League football. Greenwood is next in line. Joe Gelhardt can play, too.

But with all three strikers out, Gelhardt will surely start on Sunday up top. Crysencio Summerville has been used as a 10 in pre-season and he is likely to drop into that role. Getting Greenwood back is important, or, a new signing.
