Kai Wagner continues to be linked with a move to Leeds United ahead of the January window with his contract at Philadelphia Union set to expire – but the MLS side have made a move to keep him.
Wagner, 26, has sparkled in American since moving to the MLS from Germany. Clocking up 170 games for The Union, he has had a hand in 39 goals. During the 2023 season, he had a hand in 14 goals in 42.
But his exit from Philadelpha looks pretty nailed on. His contract at the MLS side ends on December 31. He will be a free agent come January – and right now, is able to be approached on a pre-contract basis.
Leeds have been linked with a move – along with West Ham and Brentford. A more-recent report said that Brighton held an interest in him. Now, The Athletic have delivered an update on the German flyer.
Indeed, they state that Philadelphia have tried to keep Wagner in the past week, by offering him new terms. It is unclear if he will choose to sign on – with AEK Athens also said to have made Wagner a bid.

Leeds have been named again as showing interest in the assist machine. He would be a top signing, especially with Leeds lacking in left-back options. Sam Byram and Junior Firpo are currently injured.
Luring Wagner to the club would be a superb bit of business, especially on a free. But as the January window hones into view, you would expect that the left-back will have interest from top-tier clubs.
It will be interesting to see where he ends up come the end of the January window. It might well be that Philadelphia end up keeping him but you would also say, Leeds need a left-back now, more than ever.
