New Leeds deal is perfect timing as Orta meeting is confirmed this month – opinion

Jack Harrison confirmed earlier this week that his agent will be meeting with Victor Orta over the course of the next month in order to discuss a new deal for the Leeds United winger at Elland Road – and it has come at the perfect time.

Harrison, 25, has been at Leeds since the summer of 2018 – initially joining the club on loan for his first three years at Leeds. His loan was made permanent in 2021. He has clocked up 180 games for Leeds – having a hand in 54 goals.

This season, his form has been up and down. Starting in stunning form, he had a hand in four goals in his first three games. A goal and an assist against Chelsea. But since that 3-0 win in August, Harrison has not scored, or created.

The £11million signing said this week, as per the YEP, that his agent is due to meet with Orta in the next month to discuss a new deal. Ahead of the January window, and given the time left on his current deal, it is perfect timing, just.

It is the ideal time to sort out his future for a number of reasons. Sky Sports reported in the summer that he was the subject of interest from Newcastle and Tottenham. But having sold Kalvin Phillips and Raphinha, Leeds said hands off.

So, there is interest in his services – reason no.1. Reason no.2, is that while there are critics of Harrison among the Leeds fanbase – he deserves a new deal. He remains a crucial part of the Leeds side, and a long-term cog in the future works.

But the main reason is the length remaining on his current deal. Ending in June 2024, Harrison is about to see his deal enter the final 18 months. Doubt over his future will start to arise, and come the summer, his price tag will plummet.

It will start to do so in January. So, even if Leeds are planning on selling Harrison in the long run – handing him a new deal strengthens the value of their asset. Getting it done in the next few weeks is perfect timing, ahead of January.
