Nadiem Amiri reacts with one-word verdict as Leeds United player Josuha Guilavogui makes debut against Plymouth

Josuha Guilavogui was one of three Leeds United players to make his debut for Daniel Farke’s side on Saturday afternoon as The Whites eased past Wayne Rooney’s Plymouth at Elland Road.

The seven-time France star arrived at Leeds last month as a free transfer having been out of contract since June. The versatile midfielder’s contract came to an end at German side Mainz and Leeds swooped.

With Leeds suffering crucial injuries in central midfield and at centre-back in Ilia Gruev, Ethan Ampadu and Max Wober, Guilavogui has been drafted in largely because of his ability to play in both positions.

On Saturday, he made his debut having been on the bench against Bristol City the game prior. The 34-year-old was given the last 15 minutes of Saturday’s 3-0 win, handing Joe Rothwell a brief period of rest.

It was a comfortable win for Leeds. With Plymouth failing to register a shot, Wayne Rooney tried to nullify the Leeds side by removing many of his attackers and focusing on defending on Saturday afternoon.

But Dan James’ rocket from 25 yards opened the scoring, before Joel Piroe and Brenden Aaronson proved clinical in the final third to take Leeds into the break 3-0 up and the scoreline remained until full-time.

Guilavogui posted after his debut: “What a day to start with all of YOU! Marching on Together, it’s more than an anthem!I will quickly learn it by heart. Here we go with Leeds United… Merci, merci, merci.”

Leeds fans will remember Amiri’s name. The Germany star flew to Thorp Arch in Daniel Farke’s first summer as Leeds manager, after Leeds made a £5m bid to sign Amiri from Bayer Leverkusen last August.

But he joined Mainz instead, where he linked up with Guilavogui last season. Amiri responded to the new Leeds player’s post on Instagram, commenting “boss” while Joel Piroe also reacted to Guilavogui’s post.

It is a quick turnaround for Leeds with a trip to rivals Millwall up next on Wednesday night. With first-placed Sunderland failing to win on Saturday, victory could see Leeds climb to the Championship summit.
