More frustration for Leeds United outcast Isaac Schmidt as official statement made

Isaac Schmidt has endured a difficult year after his move to Leeds United on the final day of the 2024 summer transfer window, and there’s more frustration to come.

Having scored for Swiss side St. Gallen the night before, Schmidt joined Leeds on the final day of the 2024 window. Leeds had already completed the £3.4m signing of Ao Tanaka that day from Fortuna Dusseldorf.

Schmidt is believed to have arrived at Leeds for a fee of £4.6m and was expected to rival Jayden Bogle and Junior Firpo for a place in the Leeds defence. But it quickly became apparent Schmidt wasn’t trusted.

When Bogle or Firpo were unavailable, it would be Sam Byram to bridge the gap. Daniel Farke did not start Schmidt once in the Championship and only offered him a handful of substitute outings at the end.

Isaac Schmidt suffers injury on Switzerland National Team duty

What came as a saving grace for Schmidt, was a surprise call-up to the Switzerland National Team during the second half of Leeds’ promotion season. His lack of game time was not an issue for Murat Yakin.

The same manager that is not calling-up Noah Okafor, at the moment. Schmidt has retained his place in the Swiss side since, and has since gone on loan to Werder Bremen where he is starting to make inroads.

But typically, some bad news for Schmidt. Werder Bremen confirmed in an official statement on their site that Schmidt has suffered a foot injury and has returned to the German club halfway through the break.

Schmidt was an unused sub for Switzerland in their win over Gabriel Gudmundsson’s Sweden last time out, and will not be available for selection when Yakin’s men take on Jaka Bijol’s Slovenia tonight.

Schmidt joins Max Wober on the Werder Bremen sidelines

It is unclear what the extent of Schmidt’s injury is, though a foot issue would suggest that it may be more of a knock than a lengthy muscle problem. That is unlike his Leeds and Werder teammate, Max Wober.

Wober is yet to play a single game for Werder having torn his hamstring shortly after going on loan to the German club earlier in the summer. It is unclear when the duo will eventually be able to play again.

What is clear, however, is that Wober and Schmidt have little future at Elland Road. Both players have a buy clause in their Werder loans, with Schmidt’s permanent clause believed to be worth around £3m.
