Mateo Joseph shares what the mood was like in Leeds United’s dressing room after ‘hectic’ end to clash against Preston

Mateo Joseph came off the bench on Saturday afternoon to help Leeds United nab a point against Preston North End at Deepdale, even if Leeds’ equaliser has been given as an own goal.

After Brad Potts’ opener that saw Joe Rodon fail to clear a cross and Jayden Bogle exposed as out of position, Leeds pressed and pressed against Paul Heckingbottom’s side for an equaliser at Deepdale.

Joseph had come off the bench after Patrick Bamford was initially brought on in the 65th minute, ahead of Joseph. But a low cross from Dan James was turned into the net, with Joseph getting a little touch.

It has been recorded as a Jack Whatmough own goal, but it was a poor display on the whole from Leeds. It sees Sheffield United reopen a three-point gap at the top, with Burnley also able to close the difference.

Mateo Joseph says it was “hectic” in Leeds dressing room

Joseph will be gutted that it has not been recorded as his goal and while Leeds fans will be frustrated not only by their team’s performance, but the referee’s too, it is a solid point at a side Leeds lost to last term.

The Spain U21 striker only has two goals for Leeds this season, playing in all 21 Championship games for Leeds whether that be from the start or as a sub. He told LUTV that it was “hectic” in the dressing room.

“Bit of a hectic one, we scored in the 90th minute. To be honest, we weren’t very happy with our first half. It’s a difficult feeling, we got a point here but last year we lost. It’s not that bad, we have to keep going.”

Surely, Mateo Joseph now starts when Leeds take on Oxford

While it is perhaps a bit risky to say that there are games in the Championship that would allow Daniel Farke to rest players, newly-promoted Oxford United at home probably gives Farke that opportunity.

The clash against Oxford next Saturday precedes a run of four games in nine days. Leeds then go to Stoke on Boxing Day, Derby three days later and then host Blackburn on New Year’s Day before facing Hull.

A good run of five games that Leeds should be confident of securing five wins from, even if Leeds are due to face Blackburn on New Year’s Day. John Eustace has got the better of Farke in their last three meetings.
