Ryan Edmondson has been released by League One side Carlisle United at this midway point in the season and he is set to move to Australia and form a Leeds United reunion with boss Mark Jackson.

Edmondson, 22, spent five years on the books at Leeds. Joining from York in 2017, he only ever played twice for the senior side – instead going out on loan four times, firstly north of the border to Aberdeen.

Then, to Northampton, Fleetwood and Port Vale. He amassed 75 appearances during those four loans, but only scored eight goals and that saw Leeds choose not to hand him a deal in the summer of 2022.

He left a free agent, joining Carlisle. After 18 months, 52 games and seven goals – Edmondson has now left the club as a free agent and manager Paul Simpson hinted at where Edmondson is going next.

Speaking to Carlisle’s website, Simpson said Edmondson has an offer from Australia and in particular – the Central Coast Mariners. A side managed by none other, than former Leeds coach Jackson.

“This opportunity has come for him to go over to Australia. He’s moved out of his apartment, his head is already there. Led to believe he’s going to Central Coast Mariners with a coach he knows from Leeds.”

Edmondson needed a change. Just 14 professional goals in 129 senior appearances is a sign that he has not yet found his perfect home and maybe a chance down under with a coach he knows will help him.

It seems a move to Australia has not gone down particularly well with his manager and Carlisle have moved to get him out – rather than waiting with a player that knows he will be leaving at some point.
