Manager delighted with ‘terrific’ on-loan Leeds player after playing him in a different position

Sam Greenwood opened his account for Middlesbrough on Saturday during a 4-0 win over Sunderland and Michael Carrick has raved about the Leeds United talent – praising him despite playing in a new role.

Greenwood, 21, had failed to start for Boro until last week – helping Carrick’s side continue to put their bad start to 23/24 behind them with a win over Cardiff. He was used in a central role by the Boro boss.

But then on Saturday, Boro went across the North East to take on rivals Sunderland – Greenwood’s old side and boyhood club. He scored his first goal for Boro, in a 4-0 win. Carrick used him on the left wing.

So, the perfect way for the England U21 star to go into the break. Reports emerged this week from the pen of Phil Hay, that Middlesbrough have a £1.5m clause in his loan deal from Leeds. Seems very cheap.

Carrick raved about his summer signing in quotes published by Teesside Live, praising the Leeds star for a “terrific” display – and scoring, despite being used in a new role by the Manchester United legend.

“He’s still finding his feet for us. But I have faith and trust in him, and knew what he was capable of, even in a different position to the other night. He was terrific all round and I was really pleased with him.

“It will be a big one for him as well, to get his first goal in a big game like this. And for the performance he gave, it should definitely be a massive boost for him moving forward,” Carrick said, on Greenwood.

Greenwood opens Boro account: Carrick praises Leeds talent

Sending Greenwood out on loan was questionable in the first place. Especially, with Leeds trying to sign a no.10. Bids were made for both Nadiem Amiri and Matt O’Riley but neither came to fruition for Leeds.

What is even more worrying is that Boro can sign Greenwood for just £1.5m. He might have played his last game for Leeds, given Boro’s bargain permanent clause inserted in the loan. Looks like he may go.
