Middlesbrough and Plymouth Argyle played out an exciting 3-3 draw on Saturday and Leeds United loanee Sam Greenwood stood out – earning praise from Teesside Live in their player ratings piece.
Greenwood, 21, netted his third goal in five Championship games for Michael Carrick’s side on Saturday, after winning a penalty just before the hour mark – to help Boro equalise and make it 2-2 at Home Park.
A few minutes later, and the £3m Leeds man made it 3-2 to Boro. A key display for Carrick’s men, which saw Greenwood complete 90 minutes for the first time since leaving us to join Middlesbrough on loan.
He now boasts three goals in 10 Boro appearances, and arguably an assist if you count winning a spot kick as such. Teesside Live did a player ratings piece on Saturday evening, and gave him a 7/10 rating.
“Struggled to get into the game in the first half. Came out with real fire in the second. After two chances, his clever feint drew the foul to win a penalty. Then, he scored his own shortly after to put Boro in front.”

Greenwood is clearly impressing at Middlesbrough and it does beg the question, when Leeds tried to sign a no.10, why did we not consider keeping him? He might have been the ideal cover in that role.
He showed he can have an impact in the Premier League too, having a hand in five goals. But, maybe he just needed game time to start to develop his potential and he is certainly doing that at Middlesbrough.
The Athletic said in October that Middlesbrough have the option to sign Greenwood on a permanent basis, for a bargain £1.5m. You would expect, given his form, that Carrick’s side will activate that deal.
