Joe Gelhardt continues to struggle out on loan at Championship side Sunderland after joining the Wearside club in the January window on loan from Leeds United – with the Sunderland Echo giving him 5/10 for his Saturday display.
Gelhardt, 21, started once again up top as Sunderland played host to Luton Town. In a game that ended 1-1 draw, the ex-Wigan star – who has been called up to England’s U21 squad this month – did not score, lasting 72 minutes.
It comes after just one goal in his previous nine appearances for the Black Cats, also laying on two assists. Tony Mowbray recently said that the striker is lacking in confidence – even after his impressive display against Norwich.
On Saturday, he lead the line for Sunderland again with star striker Ross Stewart still sidelined with an injury. But Gelhardt failed to deliver again and the Sunderland Echo gave him 5/10 for his performance. They gave their verdict.
“Ran relentlessly but didn’t trouble the Luton back three a great deal, and missed his one big chance to level the scores shortly before coming off,” The Sunderland Echo reported on Saturday evening, after a 1-1 draw with Luton.

Gelhardt given 5/10 for display as Leeds man continues to struggle
What next for Gelhardt, when his loan at Sunderland ends? If his form – or lack of it – continues, then what do Leeds do with Joffy? Georgie Rutter has been brought to the club and given he is a £35m investment, he will be preferred.
Patrick Bamford and Rodrigo remain. But their long-term future is in doubt. Bamford has struggled with injuries over the last 18 months and is yet to really get going again. While, Rodrigo is on fire – but his contract ends in June 2024.
So, while there might be no path into the senior side as things stand – it might become clearer in the summer. But the likelihood is that Leeds send Joffy out on loan to another Championship side next season, to get him on track.
