Joe Gelhardt got an assist on Sunday as he created the only goal of the game for Sunderland in a 1-0 win away at in-form Norwich – and Chronicle Live handed the Leeds star a 7/10 rating, saying it was his best display since joining.

Gelhardt, 20, started for the eighth time in the Championship for Sunderland on Sunday against Norwich. The Leeds man was under pressure after being hooked at half-time last time out, during a 5-1 league defeat to Bristol City.

But, the Leeds talent was superb. Against a Norwich side that were always going to dictate possession and chances, he was tasked with keeping Grant Hanley and Ben Gibson occupied. Two centre-backs with Premier League quality.

However, Gelhardt did just that. He never gave them an inch and used his body well. His hold-up play was excellent and that led to the only goal of the game, coming short before finding Abdoullah Ba. Chronicle Live gave him a 7.

“His best all-round performance yet for Sunderland, produced the assist for the goal and should have scored one himself soon afterwards,” The Chronicle Live reported on Sunday afternoon, with Gelhardt lasting 79 minutes.

He was excellent for Sunderland. It was the kind of game that suited Gelhardt. Backs against the wall and the Black Cats ace needed to fight, to be a talisman. To drive his side up the pitch and battle with the opposing central defenders.

But also for Joffy, it was a step in the right direction. One that he really needed. He did not score and only has one goal in his eight games but if he is to show Leeds that he can have a future at Elland Road, these displays are just as crucial.
