Leeds United secured first place in the Championship table with a last-gasp 4-3 victory over Swansea City on Sunday afternoon, as Wilfried Gnonto scored moments after a Swansea equaliser.

Leeds had initially gone behind to Swansea’s opener through Harry Darling, due to some poor marking from a Matt Grimes free-kick. But Dan James’ unselfish pass to Manor Solomon saw Leeds equalise.

But Swansea did not stop. In-form Liam Cullen, fresh from scoring a brace against Iceland for Wales with Joe Rodon and James, netted for Swansea just before the break. Leeds came back again, an own goal.

Another Wales star unable to prevent turning the ball into his own net, in Ben Cabango. Solomon then made it 3-2, thanks to an assist from Sam Byram. Leeds though, looked as though they had blown it.

Florian Bianchini looked to have won a point for Swansea, but it was another substitute that secured all three points. James slipped the ball into Wilfried Gnonto, who netted his third goal of the campaign.

Byram deputised for the suspended Junior Firpo. Stuart Dallas recently described Byram as “Mr. Reliable”, and he proved that again – impressing Liam Cooper, but surprising Largie Ramazani with his speed.

They commented on Byram’s Instagram post, which he captioned: “Crazy game but we found a way to win. Thanks to everyone that travelled, onto Wednesday.”

Byram was replaced by Max Wober in the 84th minute, after another solid outing on the left. He should have had an assist against QPR but for an offside, but he finally notched his first assist against Swansea.

One thing that is up in the air regarding Byram is his long-term future. He signed a one-year deal in the summer of 2023, reuniting with Daniel Farke and did the same in the most-recent summer at Leeds.

But at the end of the season, Byram will be out of contract again and while he has the chance in the starting line-up, he has to show Farke why he deserves to stay. On Sunday, again, he certainly did that.
