Leeds United were reportedly told to pay £3.5m for Djordje Jovanovic in the summer, with the Serbian star impressing for Robbie Keane’s side Maccabi Tel Aviv – but instead, he moved to Swiss side Basel.
Jovanovic was the subject of interest from Leeds in the last window. It comes after scoring 32 goals in 64 games during 18 months in Israel. Keane made the surprise move to become their boss last summer.
A report from Sports Walla said that Leeds wanted to sign the striker. Then, a further report from Israeli outlet TV Sports Arena said Maccabi Tel Aviv wanted £3.5m for Jovanovic – and were willing to sell.
It makes sense. Because, Jovanovic left Maccabi Tel Aviv towards the end of the window – making a move to Switzerland with Basel. He has since sparkled for the Swiss giants, in his nine appearances.
Often a powerhouse in Switzerland, Basel have really struggled this season. In a similar case to what is happening with Ajax in The Netherlands right now, Basel have dropped off completely. Rock bottom.

Leeds told to pay £3.5m for Djordje Jovanovic: Shining at Basel
Indeed, of a 12-team league, Basel sit 12th. But despite that, Serbian ace Jovanovic has still made a superb start to life at his new club – scoring four goals in his nine games, and laying on five assists.
Of course, Leeds have plenty in attack. Keeping Georginio Rutter, Willy Gnonto and Cree Summerville and adding Joel Piroe and Jaidon Anthony. Patrick Bamford and Joe Gelhardt are also options up top.
So, Jovanovic was hardly a priority for Leeds in the summer. But, at £3.5m he clearly would have been a bargain – given he is impressing, at least in terms of his numbers, in a side that are really struggling.
