Leeds wanted Tottenham star in January and now, he is on fire for Antonio Conte

Prior to Leeds luring Weston McKennie to the club on loan from Juventus, the Whites reportedly wanted Tottenham star Oliver Skipp on loan – but it is clear Antonio Conte made the right decision, from Tottenham’s point of view.

McKennie, 24, has since come in and started the last four Premier League matches – having watched from the bench against Nottingham Forest before a substitute outing. He has been excellent, his display on Saturday probably his best.

Joint first in terms of key passes along with Jack Harrison and Brenden Aaronson, McKennie almost scored too. The midfielder made three tackles as per WhoScored, and boasted the second best passing rate – completing 60 of 66.

But it could have been very different. Indeed, Football London claim that Skipp was a loan target for Leeds among a number of other clubs. Leeds moved for McKennie, with Conte decided to block loan moves for the Tottenham star.

It is a decision that has proved to be inspired at Spurs. With Rodrigo Bentancur sidelined until potentially November, Skipp is now being relied upon at Spurs. On Sunday, he scored his first Spurs goal – a rocket in a 2-0 win over Chelsea.

While Skipp would have clearly been a stunning signing for Leeds given his Spurs form, Conte made the right move to block the 22-year-old going out on loan. His performances since Bentancur’s injury have been superb – like Sunday

Impressing in Milan, Skipp has been crucial in two consecutive 2-0 wins over West Ham and then Chelsea. His gritty, hard-working style of play would have suited us to a tee in the fight to avoid the drop. Especially, with Tyler Adams.

Instead of Leeds, he is now starring at Spurs and as said, Conte made the right decision. We can hardly feel aggrieved to have missed out on Skipp with McKennie starring – but it would have been nice to see Skipp in a Leeds shirt.
