Leeds United reportedly wanted to sign Josh Brownhill from Burnley last summer after the Clarets were relegated to the Championship – but he stayed at Turf Moor, and the midfielder has starred in Vincent Kompany’s Burnley side.
Brownhill, 27, started 33 of Burnley’s 38 Premier League games last season – missing a handful due to Covid-19. But he was impressive in a disappointing side that were eventually relegated – allowing Leeds to remain in the top tier.
90Min reported last summer that Leeds wanted to inflict a double blow on Burnley, by signing Brownhill. But, he did not leave despite relegation and this season, he has been excellent. He has clocked up 42 appearances for Burnley.
In that time, he has had a hand in 15 goals – scoring six and creating nine – while also captaining Burnley six times. Burnley are on the brink of going up as Champions, 11 points clear of Sheffield United with eight games left to play.
Brownhill has been key to that and with Leeds lacking in midfield right now after an injury to Tyler Adams, it would have been nice to have had a player like Brownhill come in and ease the lack of depth. Leeds missed one, there.

Indeed, Brownhill is now more than likely to put pen to paper on a new deal at Burnley. His current contract expires at the end of the 2023-24 season – and will have probably waited to see this season, if Burnley would go back up.
His patience has paid off. Now, more than likely to be back in the Premier League under an exciting manager in the form of Kompany, Brownhill will surely pen a new deal. Ending any potentially lingering hope at Leeds of his signing.
But it is clear that while his excellent form has come in the Championship, Leeds have missed out on a midfielder that is proven in the Premier League. Goals, assists, tenacity. A player that would have really helped, right now.
