Leeds United reportedly wanted to sign Harry Winks from Tottenham Hotspur last summer and after a loan spell at Andrea Radrizzani’s new club Sampdoria, the Whites should reignite their interest after relegation to the second tier.
Winks, 27, endured a difficult season at Sampdoria. An ankle injury kept the England star sidelined for the first half of the campaign. Despite Sampdoria’s relegation, he actually impressed in the second half – clocking up 20 outings.
Radrizzani’s new club have an option to buy Winks but after relegation, the chances of Winks joining permanently are zero. He will return to Ange Postecoglou’s new side Spurs, where he finds a year left on his £50k-a-week deal.
Jesse Marsch is said to have shown interest in Winks while Leeds boss. The Mail said Leeds were battling Everton and Southampton for Winks, possibly on loan. Nigel Martyn told us he would be a “good fit” for Leeds in midfield.
With Winks hardly showing why he deserves a place in Tottenham’s side under Postecoglou, Winks will be looking for a new move this summer. Premier League clubs could be interested. But he needs a new challenge this summer.
Leeds should reignite Winks interest after loan at Radrizzani’s Sampdoria
Winks needs to reignite the kind of form that saw him shine for Spurs against Real Madrid in the Champions League. He needs to join a team where he is going to play and perhaps, a drop down in division will help him achieve that.
Leeds need a midfielder. Tyler Adams is expected to go, with The Mail claiming Forest are keen. Marc Roca is set to leave, while Weston McKennie has gone. There is no news, as of yet, regarding a new deal for Adam Forshaw.
Winks needs a new challenge, the club have shown interest in him, there is a connection that could be exploited between Sampdoria and Radrizzani and Leeds need a midfielder like him. Ambitious, but on loan, he would be ideal.
