Daniel Farke insisted Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s missed penalty did not define his performance after Leeds United’s draw with Crystal Palace, and shared what he was like in the dressing room.

The Leeds manager backed his striker after the miss and pointed to the forward’s mentality and overall contribution as reasons why he remains a key figure in the team, following the 0-0 draw at Selhurst Park.

Calvert-Lewin had the chance to give Leeds the lead from the penalty spot but was unable to convert the opportunity. Chris Sutton described his attempt as “horrible” on co-commentary, as he dragged it wide.

Farke admitted the striker was naturally disappointed in the dressing room after the game, but stressed that missed penalties are simply part of football. Farke said: “Of course he’s disappointed. This is football.

“Even Harry Kane missed a penalty, you have to adapt to it. “The Leeds manager also made clear the forward’s overall display should not be judged purely on that moment: “Happy with his performance.

“Still a crucial part today. I was a striker and I missed more penalties than you could count. It was a sign of his character that he didn’t dwell on it. Even the best players in the world miss penalties,” Farke added.

Calvert-Lewin won eight of those. The most duels competed in by any player on the pitch, and fifth-highest in terms of wins. The England striker gave Palace’s defenders a real handful on Sunday.

He also recorded four touches inside the opposition penalty area as he continued to offer a focal point for Leeds in attacking situations. The fourth-highest among the players to make an appearance.

Calvert-Lewin’s penalty record puts the miss into context

A review of Calvert-Lewin’s penalty record shows the striker has generally been reliable from the spot during his professional career. He has scored 10 penalties while missing only two across his career.

That record highlights why he continues to be trusted when Leeds are awarded spot kicks. The numbers show that the miss against Crystal Palace stands out as an exception rather than a consistent issue.

Why Farke still trusts his Leeds striker

Farke’s reaction after the match made clear that his confidence in Calvert-Lewin remains unchanged. The Leeds manager believes resilience and mentality are essential qualities for any striker.

Calvert-Lewin demonstrated those traits during the remainder of the match as he continued to compete physically and lead the line. Instead of dwelling on the miss, the striker remained engaged.

That response explains why Farke still sees him as an important part of the team. The missed penalty may have been the headline moment, but wider performance still carried real value for Leeds.
