Leeds United star would ‘love’ to stay put but his agent’s prediction will surely ring true in 2024

Jamie Shackleton has returned to the Leeds United fold against all the odds. But his long-term future remains in doubt and while it is reported he would ‘love’ to stay – his agent’s prediction may ring true.

The 24-year-old has been excellent for Leeds after an indifferent season on loan at Millwall – where he started as many games as he was subbed on. This season, he has played all over the pitch for Leeds.

Daniel Farke is an admirer, of Shackleton. A player that is perfect for the bench – to cover numerous positions when needed. Right-back, left-back, right wing, left wing, holding midfield or further forward.

But there are a couple of long-term issues Shackleton must consider. The first being obvious. His deal expires in June. Then, should he sign a new contract – and be happy to warm the bench at Elland Road?

If Leeds are promoted – Shackleton would struggle to get near the bench. Smyth claims Shackleton would ‘love’ to sign a new deal and remain at Elland Road. But his agent predicted something different.

Indeed, towards the end of last season – Hayden Evans, Shackleton’s representative, told Phil Hay’s Athletic podcast that he needs to find a move for the Leeds star. That was before he returned to Leeds.

“It is probably something where we need to find him a permanent move away. He needs to be starting games, he’s good enough. The quality he has has not diminished in any way. Trains hard, works hard.”

Shackleton would love to stay but agent prediction may ring true

Ultimately, when everyone is fit, there is no room for Shackleton in the starting XI. Glen Kamara, Archie Gray, Ethan Ampadu and Ilia Gruev are all options in the middle of the park. Right-back is well covered.

Luke Ayling, Djed Spence when he returns. Left-back? Sam Byram and injured duo Stuart Dallas and Junior Firpo. When all our fit, Shackleton may even struggle to make the bench. Promotion worsens that.

It means Leeds will make signings, adding to what we already have. Shackleton then, is already fighting a losing battle. He can do no more – but ultimately, his agent is right. A permanent exit will be required.
