It was a day to remember for Georginio Rutter on Sunday afternoon as the Frenchman produced his best performance for Brighton since leaving Leeds United for the Seagulls.
Rutter made the controversial move to leave Leeds in the summer after duo Archie Gray and Crysencio Summerville had already departed for Premier League clubs. Brighton paid a club-record £40m for Rutter.
It was a blow for Leeds, who might not have seen Rutter’s exit coming given the sales of Gray and then Summerville. The French talent scored his first goal for Brighton last weekend, a header against Chelsea.
But on Sunday, Rutter took his form to Brighton to a new level. The former Hoffenheim and Rennes star scored one and created the winner as Tottenham went 2-0 up, only for Brighton to come back and win.
Brennan Johnson and James Maddison scored first-half goals as Gray’s Spurs took a 2-0 lead into the half-time break. Gray remained an unused sub after playing as a centre-back for Tottenahm in the week.
Wilfried Gnonto impressed by Rutter’s display for Brighton
But Brighton came roaring back in the second half. Fellow new signing Yankuba Minteh opened the scoring for Fabian Hurtzeler’s side, before Rutter was played in by Kaoru Mitoma to equalise for Brighton.
Then, a moment of magic. Leeds fans became accustomed to Rutter creating something out of nothing and he did that on Sunday, receiving the ball from a throw-in near the corner flag and dazzling defenders.
He went past a few players before sliding in a cross for Danny Welbeck to score a header. A brilliant goal made by Rutter that earned Brighton all three points, prompting Gnonto to reply on his Instagram post.
Gnonto’s one-word reaction is translated as “easy”, while Diogo Monteiro also commented.

Danny Welbeck has a new nickname for Georginio Rutter
Leeds fans were particularly saddened to see Rutter playing so well in the Premier League, but not in a Leeds shirt on Sunday afternoon. Clearly, Rutter has picked a side that is going to allow him to shine.
Not only is he impressing some Brighton fans with his performances, but his teammates too. Welbeck said he has nicknamed Rutter “velcro” because of the way the ball sticks to him, talking to BBC Sport.
Rutter mght have struggled in the Premer League with Leeds having joined for a club-record fee from Hoffenheim, but he is doing the business in his early appearances with Brighton after just six matches.
