Sunday afternoon saw Georginio Rutter and Archie Gray do battle and it was Brighton that came out on top against Tottenham Hotspur in a topsy-turvy clash between the two Leeds pals.

Leeds made four major sales in the summer and two of those were at The Amex on Sunday afternoon. Rutter was given another start by Brighton boss Fabian Hurtzeler after netting against Chelsea last week.

Gray meanwhile, is yet to start a Premier League game for Tottenham though did make his second start in the week when Spurs faced Hungarian side Ferencvaros away from home. Gray played as a centre-back.

Spurs took the lead inside 25 minutes when Dom Solanke slipped in Brennan Johnson to score. James Maddison made it 2-0 to Tottenham, but Rutter inspired a second-half comeback for Brighton to win 3-2.

Kaoru Mitoma firstly created a goal for fellow new signing Yakubah Minteh before finding Rutter, who turned the game around for The Seagulls to win 3-2 and continue his brilliant start on the south coast.

Georginio Rutter victorious in battle vs Archie Gray’s Tottenham

Gray remained an unused substitute and will have watched Rutter dance past a couple of defenders before finishing left-footed past Guglielmo Vicario to make it 2-2, before a bit of magic on the left flank.

Rutter received the ball from a throw in near the corner flag, only to then dance past a couple of Spurs defenders before sliding a chipped cross into the box where he found unmarked striker Danny Welbeck.

A moment of magic from Rutter, who is no stranger to magic. Leeds fans will fondly remember the Harry Potter celebration Rutter did, after talking to Matthew Lewis. A good day for Rutter, not so much for Gray.

Of course, the duo are at different stages of their careers. Gray remains a rookie while Rutter is now at his fourth major club having spent time at Rennes, Hoffenheim, Leeds and then joining Brighton for £40m.

Rutter was always expected to make more of an immediate impact while the hope is for Gray, that he is able to become a future England international under the guise of Ange Postecoglou in North London.

Gray is set to make more of an impact in the Cup competitions in his first season at Spurs at least, initially. Rutter is yet to see out 90 minutes but all six of his games have come in the Premier League for Brighton.

Gray meanwhile has started and finished both of Tottenham’s two European games, as well as play 90 minutes in the Carabao Cup – a 2-1 away win at Coventry, which saw Gray describe Elland Road as home.
