Leeds United player picked in Nations League Team of the Round after record-breaking game

A whole host of Leeds United players have been on international duty in the last couple of days with Mateo Joseph, Wilfried Gnonto and Brenden Aaronson among those representing their nation.

Ilia Gruev enjoyed a superb international break as Gruev helped Bulgaria end a two-year run without a win in competitive football, beating Northern Ireland. Ao Tanaka and Junior Firpo have also featured.

Even last night, Jeremiah Mullen helped Scotland’s U21 side win 5-0 over Malta and take a giant leap towards qualifying for next summer’s European Championships in Slovakia, while Wales also featured.

Craig Bellamy called up four players from Leeds to his Wales squad, with Dan James missing out. Ethan Ampadu and Joe Rodon featured in Wales’ first, while Karl Darlow and Charlie Crew remained subs.

Karl Darlow in WhoScored’s Nations League Team of the Round

A 0-0 draw against Turkey. In their second fixture of the break, Wales went to a rainy Montenegro and flew back with a 2-1 win, picking up four Nations League points over the last couple of weeks.

Darlow, 33, was handed his debut for Wales. It saw former Newcastle stopper Darlow break a 20-year record, becoming the eldest player to make his Wales debut since former goalkeeper Martyn Margetson.

Qualification for the tournament in USA, Mexico and Canada is yet to begin but £400k signing Darlow will have one eye on the tournament and representing Wales in a couple of years, even if he is aged 35.

He will have been hoping to get an early chance to make an impression on new manager Bellamy, and the Wales gaffer gave him that chance in tricky conditions having started Danny Ward against Leicester.

Despite the pitch, being away from home and the incredible amount of rain, Darlow starred between the sticks. It is the perfect start for the Leeds stopper if he is to be no.1 for Wales ahead of the World Cup.
