Leeds United player is an ‘absolute delight’ for Daniel Farke as Neil Redfearn discusses starting the Elland Road star

Leeds United cruised to a comfortable 3-0 win over Coventry City on Saturday as Daniel Farke’s side made it four wins from seven Championship games this season, and picked up a fifth clean sheet.

Against a side that saw Leeds struggle last season, The Whites picked up an easy win at Elland Road. Last season, Leeds suffered defeat to Coventry away from home and could only manage a 1-1 draw at home.

But on Saturday, goals from Wilfried Gnonto, Jayden Bogle and Joel Piroe saw Leeds produce their best win so far and arguably, their most-controlled performance with Coventry failing to lay a glove on Leeds.

In what is a busy week for Leeds in which Farke’s men faced their first game of three in the space of six days on Saturday, they got off to the perfect start. Next up for Leeds, is a clash at Norwich on Tuesday.

One key element from the win was Piroe coming off the bench and scoring for a third time this season. The Dutchman now has eight goals in 2024, five of which have been as a sub for Farke’s side this year.

Neil Redfearn discusses whether Joel Piroe should start for Leeds

Should Piroe start for Leeds? Well, Mateo Joseph has one goal in seven Championship starts now though the Spaniard is key to the way Leeds are playing and has laid on three assists for the Yorkshire outfit.

Former Leeds manager Redfearn discussed whether Piroe should be starting for Leeds ahead of Joseph. He says that Piroe must be an “absolute delight” for Farke and he’s obviously not making it difficult.

“He’s an absolute delight for Farke because he’s obviously not banging the door down. A lot of humility, doesn’t sulk, he comes on and picks up the baton and runs with it,” Redfearn told BBC Radio Leeds.

“He realises there is going to be space, he’s gonna get chances. A predator, an out-and-out goalscorer. Could start him, but he’s drifted in games. When he comes off the bench he knows there will be chances.”

Piroe is on fire even though he has only started one league game for Leeds this season. But he has come off the bench for Leeds in all of the other six Championship games, while starting in the Carabao Cup.

So, the Dutchman has a goal in every three games when starting. But one in every four as a sub so clearly, his form is better when starting but it must be said, obviously he’s getting less minutes as a substitute.

To have a player that can score one goal in every four substitute appearances is hugely impressive in the limited game time he is getting. Piroe is a player that Farke said is the Championship’s best finisher.
