Leeds United look set to be in the market for a new left-back with the January transfer window now open.
Daniel Farke has already confirmed that is an area he is looking to address and that has now become even more important with Sam Byram picking up another injury on Monday.
Junior Firpo did produce an impressive double-assist display from the bench, but has also struggled with his fitness this season, and therefore it is paramount that one arrives this month.
One player who has been linked with a potential switch to Elland Road is Hellas Verona’s Scottish star Josh Doig, with Leeds said to be battling both Rangers and AC Monza for his signature.
Doig’s physical stature has been compared to that of Cristiano Ronaldo previously and at just 21, he already has over 100 senior appearances under his belt.
Leeds want Doig with ‘incredible potential’
Former Verona manager Gabriele Cioffi was quick to talk up the quality of Doig when working alongside him back in 2022, stating he has ‘incredible potential,’ and that he has all the attributes of an attacking full-back, as per Football Scotland.
He said: “In England they say, ‘if you’re good enough, you’re old enough’. If I pick young players then I have no doubts and neither do they. Doig did well; he has incredible potential. He is a great crosser of the ball and finisher.
“He’s starting to get minutes in his legs – he got injured after two training sessions – and his characteristics will come to the fore and his quality will show.”
Clearly with the number of appearances he has already accumulated in senior football, Doig could be the reliable left-back Leeds have needed for a long time.
Firpo showed yesterday the quality he can produce at this level, while Byram has also proven over the course of the season how good he can be.
However, both have struggled with injuries massively over the last few months and therefore it is imperative that one arrives.
