The search for a left-back continues to drag on into the final stages of the January window as Leeds United remain patient in bringing in new signings – but Josh Doig is no longer a possible target.
Daniel Farke said before the window even began that he was in the market for new left-back additions. That is before Leeds decided to sanction the exits of Luke Ayling and Djed Spence earlier on this month.
Leeds have midfielders Archie Gray and Jamie Shackleton covering the right of defence. Injury-prone duo Junior Firpo and Sam Byram on the left. Byram of course, can play on either side of the back line.
Byram is probably the only natural right-back Leeds have, and he is being used on the other side. Leeds need a left-back, and maybe another right-sided defender, before the window slams shut on February 1.
One player Leeds had been linked with signing was that of Scottish star Josh Doig. The young left-back had been starring at Hellas Verona over the last 18 months in Serie A – after swapping Hibernian for Italy.

His form had attracted attention from the likes of Leeds, Rangers, Torino and Monza. A move to France with Marseille was then on the cards, but it fell through – perhaps handing Leeds a chance to get him.
But “excellent” Doig has now made a move – but he remains in Italy, with Sassuolo. He joins the Serie A side for a fee believed to be in the region of £5m. Another one that Leeds can tick off the transfer list.
